A 4-minute self-reflection check-in
Functioning is not the same as flourishing.
You handle what needs handling. Deadlines are met, people are held, nothing visibly drops. And still, something internal has gone quiet. That distance has a name.

Built by Dr. Mala
From someone who has watched capability quietly cost people themselves
Dr. Malasri Chaudhery-Malgeri — Dr. Mala — is a psychologist, educator, and Founder/CEO of The Synergy Center, and has taught at the university level since 2004.
She built Beyond Functioning after years of watching highly capable people function beautifully on the outside while losing contact with how they actually felt on the inside. This check-in exists to make that distance visible — before functioning becomes the only measure of how you are doing.
The Synergy Gap
Your Synergy Gap is the distance between two things that are usually measured very differently: how well you are functioning on the outside, and how well you are actually doing on the inside. A wide gap is not weakness. It is what capability costs when it goes unaccounted for.
External functioning
What you carry and deliver
Follow-through, composure, capacity under load, being the person others rely on.
Internal wellbeing
What comes back to you
Presence, restoration, pleasure, meaning, and the sense of participating in your own life.
How the Synergy Gap works
The Synergy Check-In asks 14 reflection questions. Half look outward at how you are functioning — follow-through, capacity, composure under load — and half look inward at how you are actually experiencing your life. Your Synergy Gap is simply the descriptive distance between those two dimensions, and the five patterns name common shapes that distance tends to take. They are descriptive language for self-reflection, not diagnostic categories.
The framework draws on established concepts in psychology, wellbeing and resilience research, behavior change, and trauma-informed care, alongside Dr. Mala's professional experience across clinical, educational, and organizational settings.
To be clear: the Synergy Gap framework is not a scientifically validated psychological instrument, and it is not a diagnostic test. It is a structured way to notice something that often goes unmeasured.
